We all know that searchbox in Firefox that you can customize with different search engines -forget about that. This here is the real thing: in chrome you can set up as many search engines as you like, so if you want a search engine for your own personal blog, then that’s no problem! Nope, my keyboard is actually quite fine, thanks for (not?) asking. What I’m talking about? Why…the title, of course. Goo.gl.qr. Surely you’ve recognized the first bit as resembling Google, and there’s a good reason for that: the guys and girls from Mountain View (California) have come up with a very cool URL shortener. I hear you asking “why another URL shortener? Aren’t there enough already?”, and the answers are obviously “no” and “because this one offers some cool (hidden) features that the others don’t” – in reverse order.

What’s it all about, then? Well…Say you want to link to a specific post in a site, but the URL (being SEO and all) is really long and confuses email programs, or it’s just too long for your Twitter message, or whatever…that’s when you want to shorten it to something more convenient. Others have done this before, with varying degrees of fame and success. When Google thinks they have something to add to the market, you know that at least they have the server capacity (and the speed) to do so. Enter…goo.gl! Read the rest of this entry »

Oh joy! Oh rapture! By finally offering the option to share an entire folder rather than all the documents separately, Google probably made millions of avid Google Doc adepts happy for the rest of the day. Up till today, sharing multiple Google docs was such a tedious & repetitive mouseclicking job that nothing remains from my right index finger apart from a short little stump.

A massive timesaver: sharing multiple docs in an instant!

If you’re like me, then you probably can’t wait until Google finally does what many other companies have already done for them (i.e. making GDrive available, so that you can use those countless gigabytes for something more useful than, say, collecting the last 100,000 emails you have been sent). Alas, alas…no GDrive yet, but still, there’s something else to get you excited about.

Google Sites now allows you to integrate files from all of Google’s other sites: presentations or spreadsheets that you’ve added to Google Docs, or videos from Youtube, or pictures from Picasa…it can all be added with a few simple mouse clicks.

The really good news is that you don’t lose file space in Sites when you integrate pictures from Picasa, for instance, which is very interesting when you want to create a webquest with Google Sites or so…

Ok, Gmail & Coogle Calendar -ik wil het cliché helemaal niet gebruiken dat 1+1 drie is of zo, want dan klink ik net zoals enthousiaste juryleden uit allerhande afvalwedstrijden die plots fan zijn geworden van pakweg nonkel beenhouwer en zijn dochter, die Niemand laat zijn eigen kind alleen (Willy & Willeke Alberti, al wist je dat natuurlijk wel) toch “zo ontroerend mooi kunnen brengen”. Nee, laat ik die beker maar gerust doorgeven. 1+1=3 … tsss, dan hou ik het liever op 1+1=11, courtesy of Google Labs.

Ik denk dat het zo zich langzamerhand duidelijker en duidelijker aftekent: Google Docs steekt MS Office steeds meer naar de kroon. En dat heeft zo zijn oorzaken natuurlijk: het is gratis & werkt goed. Meer nog, als het aankomt op online collaborative writing, met meerdere simultaan schrijven aan dezelfde tekst, dan is Google docs zelfs ronduit indrukwekkend; daar kan geen Sharepoint tegenaan staan, als je het mij vraagt. MS Office heeft zich altijd een beetje staande kunnen houden met het argument dat je voor Google Docs toch altijd online moest zijn, en dat is op de trein bijvoorbeeld niet altijd het geval. Dank je wel voor de tip!, moeten ze bij Google gedacht hebben. Lees verder om te weten hoe offline kunt werken in Google Docs!

Via de Connections heb je binnen Endnote natuurlijk al een enorme collectie aan universiteitsbibliotheken & museumcatalogi waaruit je referenties kunt importeren, maar mocht je daar nog altijd niet genoeg mee hebben, dan vind je misschien wel wat je zoekt op Google Scholar. Google biedt ontwikkkelaars de mogelijkheid om zelf mash-ups te maken, maar je moet er redelijk handig voor zijn. Ben je tamelijk a-technisch, dan is er sinds kort de Google Static Maps api. Daarmee knutsel je met weinig moeite en zonder programmeerwerk een adreskaartje in elkaar. Je kunt zo’n kaartje gebruiken op je (congres-)website, maar ook als bijlage in een e-mail, wanneer je mensen wil uitnodigen voor een afspraak op een bepaalde plaats. Heb je werkelijk twee linkerhanden en kom je er met de Google Static Maps api niet uit, dan is er een eenvoudige Wizard, waarmee werkelijk niets meer mis kan gaan.

Als je gebruik maakt van Outlook als organizer, dan ben je misschien geïnteresseerd in Google Calendar Sync, een Google tool waarmee je je Outlook kunt synchroniseren met de Google Calendar. Al gebruik je die Google Calendar niet actief, toch is het misschien handig om altijd je je kalender beschikbaar te hebben zelfs wanneer op een wildvreemde pc zit. Ik weet het wel, het is gevaarlijk om zomaar met vreemde vreemde pc’s te praten en zo, zelfs al schuiven ze je lekkere drop toe uit de USB-poorten, maar kom -je snapt wel. Los van de anywhere anytime toegankelijkheid van je kalender kan het misschien ook handig zijn om op die manier een back-up te hebben van je waardevolle data. Read the rest of this entry »

mmm… als dat geen gat in de markt is: een applicatie die netjes de kloof overbrugt tussen je online Google documenten en je offline Worddocumenten. Een paar handige Harry’s hebben een tooltje ontwikkeld waarmee dergelijke synchronisatie alvast een heel stuk gemakkelijker verloopt. DocSyncer is de naam -allen daarheen!
