Choosing strong passwords is very important – nothing new there. But how difficult should a password be, really? xkcd has the answer for us:

We all know that searchbox in Firefox that you can customize with different search engines -forget about that. Nope, my keyboard is actually quite fine, thanks for (not?) asking. What I’m talking about? Why…the title, of course. Goo.gl.qr. Surely you’ve recognized the first bit as resembling Google, and there’s a good reason for that: the guys and girls from Mountain View (California) have come up with a very cool URL shortener. I hear you asking “why another URL shortener? Aren’t there enough already?”, and the answers are obviously “no” and “because this one offers some cool (hidden) features that the others don’t” – in reverse order.

What’s it all about, then? Well…Say you want to link to a specific post in a site, but the URL (being SEO and all) is really long and confuses email programs, or it’s just too long for your Twitter message, or whatever…that’s when you want to shorten it to something more convenient. Others have done this before, with varying degrees of fame and success. Many people have been trying to get rid of their Facebook accounts, and have found that Facebook is not that keen on letting you go. In fact, most of us will be able to use the “Deactivate account” option under Account > Application settings, but this just makes your account dormant. Log into it again, and it will be automatically activated.

But what if you really want to get rid of Facebook then? Head over to https://ssl.facebook.com/help/contact.php?show_form=delete_account.  You’ll get a page where you can choose to permanently delete the account. Just make sure you don’t log in for 14 days, and then everything will be gone for ever. (And yes, your friends will probably miss you.)

Als je merkt dat je in Verkenner heel vaak dezelfde map nodig hebt, dan zou het eigenlijk wel interessant zijn mocht die ene map de startmap worden wanneer je een verkenner opent. En een sneltoets, dat is misschien al even interessant. Het goeie nieuws is: beide vliegen kunnen in dezelfde klap gevangen worden. Dit is hoe je daarbij te werk gaat.

Mmm, komt dat tegen: een mens gebruikt Firefox al heel zijn leven, en nu pas heb ik door dat je een link meteen kunt openen in een nieuw tabblad door erop te klikken met de middelste muisknop. Boy I feel sheepish 0_0

Ik denk dat het zo zich langzamerhand duidelijker en duidelijker aftekent: Google Docs steekt MS Office steeds meer naar de kroon. En dat heeft zo zijn oorzaken natuurlijk: het is gratis & werkt goed. Meer nog, als het aankomt op online collaborative writing, met meerdere simultaan schrijven aan dezelfde tekst, dan is Google docs zelfs ronduit indrukwekkend; daar kan geen Sharepoint tegenaan staan, als je het mij vraagt. MS Office heeft zich altijd een beetje staande kunnen houden met het argument dat je voor Google Docs toch altijd online moest zijn, en dat is op de trein bijvoorbeeld niet altijd het geval. Een snelle tussendoor tip: als er op de laatste pagina van je Worddocument slechts een paar regels staan, dan kun je dat natuurlijk manueel aanpassen door de interlinie te regelen, maar er is ook een klein hulpmiddeltje ingebouwd in Word dat eigenlijk hetzelfde resultaat oplevert. Stel, je hebt recent een Worddocument ontvangen waarin heel wat afbeeldingen staan die je welbruikbaar lijken. Omdat je de tekst niet zelf hebt geschreven is de kans ook klein dat je zelf de bronbestanden van de afbeeldingen hebt staan. Hoe geraak je dan toch nog op een snelle manier aan de jpg’s? Wel, er zijn een aantal scenario’s. Ten eerste kun je elke afbeelding afzonderlijk opslaan. Met wat geduld en een paar koffieplantages in je botten moet dat te doen zijn, maar misschien is dat toch niet de aangewezen optie. Scenario 2: mooi kijken in de ogen van de auteur, met je handen doe je maar iets kaleidoscopisch, maak ondertussen een spiraalachtig tjoerelgeluidje en probeer op die manier de auteur te hypnotiseren. Je kunt ook een afgeprint A4′tje met een zwartwitte spiraal voor zijn/haar ogen draaien -enkel voor de ervaren rotten natuurlijk. Het valt immers niet zo gemakkelijk te combineren met de kaleidoscopische handen. Affijn, hypnotiseren dus en simpelweg hem/haar opdragen alle afbeeldingen door te sturen. Het nadeel van deze methode is overduidelijk: je kunt de hypnose enkel uitvoeren in het bureau van het slachtoffer, of algemener in het lokaal waar diens computer zich bevindt; daar dient trouwens ook een internetverbinding aanwezig te zijn. Precies daardoor wordt het natuurlijk nodeloos complex. Gelukkig is er nog een derde, en véééél efficiëntere methode. Read the rest of this entry »

Er is mij recent met enige schroom de vraag gesteld hoe je in Word 2007 de scheidingslijn kunt aanpassen die standaard gebruikt wordt bij voetnoten.
