What’s it all about, then? Well…Say you want to link to a specific post in a site, but the URL (being SEO and all) is really long and confuses email programs, or it’s just too long for your Twitter message, or whatever…that’s when you want to shorten it to something more convenient. Others have done this before, with varying degrees of fame and success. When Google thinks they have something to add to the market, you know that at least they have the server capacity (and the speed) to do so. Enter…goo.gl!

Smartphones & barcodes

What can it do for you? Well…it will shorten the URL http://www.letslearnit.org/en/workshops-international/514-tools-for-teachers-new-media-a-web-20-applications (long, eh?) to http://goo.gl/EqLC in the blink of an eye. It will do more, too…but you have to experiment a bit (or read around, for that matter). Many smartphones have software that can use barcodes to quickly take you to a specific website. All you do is point your phone camera at the barcode – the software takes a picture and decrypts the barcode for you, opens a browser and voilà, you’ve entered the site without even typing a single character of the URL.

If you add .qr to the goo.gl URL, for instance (http://goo.gl/EqLC.qr, in our case), you’ll get the following image which can be inserted into any publication:

That’s not all, though. Adding .info (http://goo.gl/EqLC.info) to the link will return a page with analytics for your short URL.

It goes without saying that this nice piece of candy has its own add-ons for Firefox and for Chrome.

Juice: its Magic works just fine!

While Webmynd is activated whenever you use the Firefox search box, Juice appears whenever you drag and drop content in the right hand margin of your browser. In order to give you the most relevant results Juice does not solely rely on Google, luckily enough: for names of people or places it will use Wikipedia, while film titles will often result in IMDB-pages. Juice also gives you the possibility to store images or videos so that later on you can look at them when you have more time. It is a pity in that respect that it does not hover over your Firefox, so to speak, and that your stored images are saved in the active Firefox window only. To be honest, I am largely undecided on whether that’s a bad thing. Probably not. Social integrationwise, Juice comes with a decent set of sites you can share your results on, such as del.icio.us, digg, reddit, and the likes. Alongside that, you can also bring up a list with the most relevant tweets on your search term. I’m not that much into Twitter, so I am not particularly impressed with this feature; they might have left it out, for all I care. One thing I do find a pity is that nowhere you can tweak the settings and add your own favourite sites, for instance.

Webmynd searches your own favourite sites

Webmynd -also available for Explorer, by the way- searches, in their own words, the real web: it, too, uses more than just Google and delivers the most relevant tweets -sigh- or the most recent Wikipedia articles. With Webmynd you can add your own favourite sites, such as a dictionaries, for instance, which I think is a great feature. Webmynd will always take previous search results into account, which makes it easier to find exactly that one article you’ve  read before. It also keeps a log of the sites you visit, though you can disable this feature if you want to. Finally, Webmynd, like Juice, gives you the option to share the results on facebook, linkedIn and the whole shebang.

Het principe is redelijk eenvoudig: maak een account aan op PrintWhatYouLike en voer de url in van de pagina die je wil afprinten. Alles wordt netjes ingelezen en op het scherm kun je vervolgens regio’s selecteren en isoleren dan wel verwijderen. Wil je een pagina afdrukken die vol reclameadvertenties staat, dan is deze methode niet enkel zeer vriendelijk voor uw toner, maar zorgt het er ook voor dat de afgedrukte pagina er veel minder druk uitziet.  Minder papier, minder inkt, focus op inhoud, …  De editor kan via een bookmarklet ook gemakkelijk in de browser werkbalk geïntegreerd worden, overigens. Met de knop Do it for me, waarbij ik veronderstel dat die dan alles redelijk automatisch aanpast, heb ik minder goeie ervaringen -die leek net zo goed te werken als mijn Scala Rider, jammer genoeg.

Selecteer of verwijder wat je (niet) wil

Om PrintWhatYouLike te gebruiken volg je typisch deze stappen:

• Surf naar PrintWhatYouLike en klik op Start.
• Om de leesbaarheid te verhogen kun je indien nodig de fontgrootte aanpassen en met behulp van de knoppen remove background of remove images meteen alle grafische elementen in een pagina verwijderen.
• Verwijder de advertenties en alle andere ongewenste rommel.
• Pas de breedte van de pagina aan indien nodig.
• Combineer meerdere webpagina’s en comprimeer de inhoud ervan op zo weinig mogelijk pagina’s.
• Druk de resultaten af of bewaar als pdf of html.

• In Firefox ga je via Bladwijzer > Bladwijzers organiseren naar de bladwijzer manager (ctrl-shift-B)

Eventjes het bladwijzerbeheer openen

• Maak een nieuwe bladwijzer aan

nieuw bladwijzertje aanmaken

• … en vul de velden in zoals aangegeven op de afbeelding hieronder.

Vul de gepaste locatie in

• Walla! Het resultaat ziet er in dit geval als volgt uit. Tussen haakjes: Portsmouth is niet My club. Iedereen weet dat ManU de enigste deftige ploeg is in de Premier League.

Ik hoop maar dat ze goede vorderingen maken bij Mozilla Labs -om alle bladwijzers op mijn verschillende pc’s te synchroniseren heb ik tot nu toe mijn plan getrokken met del.icio.us & Foxmarks, een add-on voor Firefox. Geen probleem, maar mocht alles een beetje minder omslachtig kunnen: graag.
